During a morning interview, Coalition campaign spokesperson Senator James Patterson labeled the government's policy as a "tax" that would make popular vehicles significantly more expensive, citing estimates that the Ford Ranger would cost $14,000 more under the current standards.
Patterson emphasized that while the Coalition supports electric vehicle adoption, they believe consumer choice should drive the transition rather than government mandates. The fuel efficiency standards introduced by the Labor government aim to reduce vehicle emissions to help meet climate targets, with proponents arguing the policy aligns Australia with international standards and would increase EV availability.
