Coalition's Gas Export Tax Plan Could Raise Billions, Reshape Energy Policy

A proposed tax on gas exports by the Coalition, aimed at redirecting gas resources to domestic markets, could generate billions in revenue while addressing gas supply concerns for Australian households and businesses, according to economic analysis.
"Australia is one of the world's largest exporters of Liquified Natural Gas but, despite this fact, the largely foreign-owned gas industry has been making the bizarre claim that there is a shortage of gas in Australia," said Dr Richard Denniss, Executive Director of The Australia Institute.
The policy proposal represents a significant shift in energy policy approach, with Opposition Leader Peter Dutton challenging industry narratives about domestic gas availability. Research from The Australia Institute indicates over 80 percent of Australian-produced gas is currently directed to export markets, with more than half of these exports provided royalty-free to gas companies.
"Peter Dutton's rejection of that silly claim, and his proposal to tax gas exports to encourage greater local supply, is a watershed in Australian energy policy debate," Dr Denniss noted, highlighting the potential impact on both market dynamics and pricing.
The announcement creates an opportunity for bipartisan policy development, with analysts suggesting Labor could build upon the framework established by the Coalition. The proposal also draws comparisons to Norway's approach to resource management, where fossil fuel taxation helps fund public services including education.
"For decades, the major parties in Australia have seemed afraid to put the interests of Australian taxpayers ahead of the profits of the fossil fuel industry. But now that Peter Dutton has made the first step, the opportunities for the new parliament are unprecedented," according to Dr Denniss.
Energy market experts suggest the proposal could simultaneously address cost-of-living pressures for consumers while supporting climate objectives through more strategic management of gas resources.
