New analysis from The Australia Institute reveals that more than half of Australia's 8,500 journalists reside in inner metropolitan electorates, while the election battlegrounds are concentrated in outer suburbs where residents feel the brunt of cost-of-living pressures.

Inner metropolitan electorates average 111 journalists per district, while outer metropolitan areas have only 31 journalists per electorate
Sydney-based inner city electorates dominate journalist population, with Sydney (411), Wentworth (394), and Grayndler (366) housing the most media professionals
Liberal and National Party-held seats have the lowest average number of resident journalists, while Greens and Independent-held electorates have more than double the average
Calwell, Victoria (4 journalists) and Brand, Western Australia (7 journalists) represent outer suburban areas with minimal media presence

The concentration of journalists in inner city enclaves raises serious questions about the media's ability to authentically cover Australia's diverse socioeconomic challenges. "It seems unlikely the Australian media is adequately prepared to cover an election fought in the outer suburbs where few reporters live," said Stephen Long, Senior Fellow and Contributing Editor at The Australia Institute.
This geographic disconnect, compounded by the decline of local media outlets, threatens balanced election coverage and undermines democratic representation for communities already feeling overlooked.
