Prime Minister Albanese Pledges $20 Million for Central Coast Domestic Violence Center

Prime Minister Albanese on the Central Coast of New South Wales has unveiled a $20 million commitment to establish a women's and children's trauma recovery center in East Gosford, addressing the urgent crisis of domestic violence in Australia.

During Monday's announcement, Albanese candidly acknowledged that current efforts are falling short in protecting women and children, while outlining his government's comprehensive approach to ending violence within a generation.

"We are not doing well enough as a society," Albanese stated during his emotional address. "This is a whole of society problem. We need men as well to have conversations with each other, to call it out when they see unacceptable behaviour."

Gordon Fletcher, CEO of Coast Shelter, added: "Let's stop the trauma in the first place. And so, yeah, it's just devastating, and it's actually really hard to find the words because how is it that we're still in a time where a young woman can't walk home safely?"

This announcement carries particular weight in the Central Coast following the recent tragic death of teenager Audrey Griffin, highlighting the persistent threat of violence against women across Australia. With national elections approaching on Saturday, both major parties are intensifying their focus on domestic violence policy, recognizing it as a critical electoral issue. The Prime Minister's emphasis on intergenerational trauma and early intervention signals a shift toward preventative measures, while acknowledging that immediate support for victims remains crucial in addressing this national crisis.
