Good Morning. The Reserve Bank lifted the cash rate to 4.60% yesterday afternoon, the highest in around 15 years, pointing to Middle East-driven energy prices and AI demand as fresh inflation risks. In Kuantan, police say a farmer lost more than RM1.15 million to a love-scam syndicate that talked her from a fake gold investment into a bogus "recovery" platform.

Jakarta's market slumped as much as 2.2%, and the rupiah breached 18,000 to the US dollar after a new trading rule shook loose stocks stuck at the exchange's old price floor. Singapore police are warning about scammers posing as youth exchange organisers, and S&P says the Philippines has one more rate hike coming. Here's what happened and what it means for your money.- Miko Santos

Tech stocks were the main driver on the day the RBA handed down its fourth hike of the year. The index dipped briefly the moment the decision landed, then climbed back through the afternoon — a reminder that one number rarely moves an entire market the same way twice.

NEED TO KNOW

The Reserve Bank lifted the cash rate to 4.60%, the highest level in about 15 years, in its fourth hike of 2026. The board said inflation remains elevated and flagged two fresh upside risks: broadening conflict in the Middle East pushing global energy prices higher and AI-related demand driving up prices for technology goods. Jakarta's stock market fell as much as 2.2% to its lowest since mid-July, and the rupiah briefly breached 18,000 per US dollar after Indonesia's exchange cut the minimum share price from 50 rupiah to just 1. Stocks stuck at that old floor, including ride-hailing firm GoTo, dropped as much as 14% once the new rule let the market find a real price. Source: Kontan (Reuters), 29 September 2026 →

Singapore police are warning about scammers impersonating organisers of youth exchange programmes on social media, with at least eight cases reported since the start of September and losses of more than $18,000. Victims are contacted with an offer to join an overseas exchange trip, then asked to pay "registration" or "deposit" fees to a personal account. Source: Singapore Police Force, 28 September 2026 →

S&P Global Ratings expects the Philippine central bank to raise its policy rate another 25 basis points before year's end, to 5.25%, as oil prices and a weak peso keep inflation alive. It also cut its 2026 growth forecast to 2.9%, down from 4.1%. Source: The Manila Times, 24 September 2026 →

A 50-year-old farmer in Kuantan, Pahang, lost more than RM1.15 million after a man she met on WhatsApp in July posed as a cybersecurity consultant offering a gold investment. He later introduced a "lottery" platform promising to recover her money, and she transferred funds to seven bank accounts before realising none of it was real. WHAT IT MEANS FOR YOU

If your mortgage is variable, do the maths today. A 4.60% cash rate is already priced into your loan whether or not your bank has emailed you about it yet, and this increase is the fourth hike this year. The gap between what you're budgeting for and what you're actually paying keeps widening if you don't check.

If your super fund or an ETF has Indonesian exposure, today's slump is largely mechanical, not a verdict on the economy. A rule change that lets frozen stocks reprice looks dramatic on a chart, but it's plumbing, not news about the companies themselves.

A "recovery" platform that asks for more money to get your earlier money back is never real, whether it follows a gold scam in Kuantan or a fake exchange fee in Singapore. The next request, however official it sounds, is the same scam continuing.your budget and your actual payments will keep

CASE FILE

An ad turns up in a gig-work Telegram group: drivers wanted, flexible hours, and better pay than the app itself offers. The "recruiter" moves fast, no interview, just a chat. To lock in the role, the applicant pays a small "vehicle verification" fee, refundable after the first week. It's paid. A second fee follows for an "onboarding kit," then a third for "insurance" the applicant is told is mandatory before their first shift. Each one is small enough alone not to trigger alarm. By the time the applicant asks when they actually start driving, the recruiter has gone quiet and the group has been deleted.

Remember:

  • A real job never charges you to start it. Fees flowing toward the employer, not from them, is the whole tell.

  • Search the company or platform name plus "scam" before paying anything, not after.

  • If a second and third fee follow the first, that's not bad luck. Stop there and report it.

Stat: RM1.15 million. That's what one Kuantan farmer lost this week to a love-scam syndicate, which moved her savings and family loans through seven separate bank accounts before she realised the "recovery" platform was part of the same scam. It's a reminder that these schemes aren't opportunistic one-off cons — they're run as a process, with a script for every stage, including the moment a victim tries to get their money back.
