Hot and Fresh Creative Productions, in partnership with the Center for Information Resilience and Integrity Studies, the Armed Forces of the Philippines and the Philippine Coast Guard, will premiere "Alon ng Kabayanihan" on Aug. 25 to coincide with National Heroes Day.
The short film features actors Carlo Aquino, Ryza Cenon and Sid Lucero portraying military officers and fishermen whose lives intersect around Philippines' maritime sovereignty issues.
Director Kevin Mayuga designed the film as a "visual essay" focusing on mood and symbolism rather than traditional narrative structure, using radar scans and naval vessel imagery to convey urgency while avoiding direct geopolitical finger-pointing.
Producer Chris Esguerra emphasized the production's goal to spotlight fishermen and maritime frontliners' resilience through authentic storytelling rooted in Filipino values of bayanihan, dignity and hope. The film will stream on the production's Facebook page at www.facebook.com/alonngkabayanihan, representing what CIRIS Executive Director Michel Andre P. Del Rosario called "a Filipino issue" transcending political administrations.
One of two Chinese research vessels has departed the contested waters around Panatag (Scarborough) Shoal, moving approximately 100 nautical miles west of the area rather than returning to China, according to West Philippine Sea monitoring group SeaLight.
The Xiang Yang Hong 10 began its departure Thursday while the autonomous mothership Zhu Hai Yun, which arrived Monday, continues to operate near the shoal alongside six China Coast Guard vessels and six maritime militia ships within what Beijing maintains as an "exclusion zone."
The vessel movements follow an August 11 collision between a People's Liberation Army Navy warship and a China Coast Guard vessel during operations to block a Philippine Coast Guard mission supporting Filipino fisherfolk. The incident damaged both Chinese ships, with four crew members from CCG-3104 reportedly thrown overboard when its forecastle was crushed.
Philippine Coast Guard vessel BRP Cape San Agustin maintains patrols outside the disputed zone, with SeaLight director Ray Powell noting no current Chinese shadowing of the Philippine vessel. China's continued presence challenges the 2016 international arbitral ruling that recognized Panatag Shoal as a traditional fishing ground for the Philippines, China, and Vietnam.
Deputy Minority Leader Risa Hontiveros filed Senate Resolution No. 85 on Wednesday, urging the executive branch to exert legal and diplomatic pressure on China to halt destructive activities in the West Philippine Sea.
The resolution also calls for Beijing to pay reparations for environmental damage already inflicted in Philippine territorial waters, with Hontiveros estimating annual losses of at least P33 billion to marine ecosystems within the country's continental shelf and exclusive economic zone.
The senator cited Philippine Navy data showing China's presence in disputed waters reached record levels in 2024, with 251 Chinese vessels tracked within the Philippines' Exclusive Economic Zone, including 28 Coast Guard ships, 16 military warships, and 204 maritime militia vessels.
Hontiveros highlighted Philippine Coast Guard reports of coral reef destruction at Rozul Reef and Escoda Shoal, where underwater surveys revealed marine ecosystems "appeared lifeless, with minimal to no signs of life." The resolution seeks accountability for what Hontiveros calculated as approximately P396 billion in cumulative environmental damage since 2013, funds she said could support both ecosystem restoration and pandemic response efforts.

The Atin Ito coalition launched a viral "Teritoryo: West Philippine Sea Rap Challenge" on TikTok and other social media platforms, encouraging Filipinos to use hip-hop music to peacefully protest China's mounting aggression in the contested waters following recent maritime collisions.
